Fa’atete - a short Tahitian drum covered with a tight, single membrane.It is played with two sticks.

Fandromboa - two pieces of wood struck together (Madagascar)


Fiddle - the term used in traditional music for a violin.


Fingerboard - the top surface of the neck of string instruments, where the fingers press down on the strings.

Fiol - Swedish fiddle.

Fipple – the term for the sharp edge of the lip of a flute or recorder.

Firikyiwa - Thumb bell. A round hollow iron shell worn on the finger. It is struck by a heavy ring worn on the thumb (Ghana)

Fisarmonica -  general Italian term for accordion.

Flauta - flute in Spanish.

Flauta de millo - short Colombian flute, with a reed, played horizontally. It is made out of millet or sorghum cane.

Flautas de carrizo - small flutes made out of bamboo or reed grass. They come with 3, 4 and up to 5 or 6 finger holes. The three hole version is the most common and it produces the seven sounds of as major scale. They are used in Mexican traditional dances, in the Nahoa region and other states such as Tabasco, Chiapas o Oaxaca.

Flojere - Kosovar Albanian end-blown flute.

Flöjter - Swedish term for flutes.

Flowerports - Ordinary flowerpots tuned with water and played with the hands or with mallets.

Floyera - Greek shepherd's flute.


Flute -a wind musical instrument made out of wood, bone, metal or some other materialsin the form of a tube with various round holes that are covered by fingers or keys. The instrument is played by blowing a stream of air into the tube through a sharp edge opening.


Fotutu - Conch shells used as horns by the indigenous tribes in pre-colonial Cuba.

French Canadian spoons -

Fret -  On some string instruments, a thin, raised bar of metal or string, placed across the fingerboard to indicate a specific position of a note, and aid in tuning that note.

Frula -  a large wooden pipe from Serbia, also known as duduk in other countries.

Fturkes - Klezmer second violins.

Fuchi – Japanese term for the rim of the drum, where the ";ka"note is played.

Fue - transverse bamboo flute (Japan).

Fuelle -  Argentine synonym for bandoneón.

Fujara - Slovakian handmade shepherd's flute approx. 1.80 meters long (6 feet).

Fula - Malian one-stringed fiddle

Fyell - Kosovar Albanian end-blown flute.
